Through "Breakthrough," Mercy Haven reaches beyond its walls to the larger community, offering a 12-week, 24 session intense outreach and education program to homeless and formerly homeless individuals.
The goal of Breakthrough is to help participants understand the factors that have contributed to their homelessness and to give them the tools and confidence to achieve personal goals.
Breakthrough is led by Mercy Haven co-founder S. Kathy Nolan and a group of volunteer mentors. The mentors attend approximately 8 sessions and help participants identify realistic and achievable goals. In addition, a group of volunteers prepares a delicious, home-cooked meal for the participants so that they may be nourished in body as well as spirit when they come together.
As of 2015, Breakthrough has graduated more than 213 participants. These graduates have moved on to meet many of the goals they set for themselves, including moving into stable housing, finding employment, and enrolling in college.
"An Evening of Insight and Sharing" ends each Breakthrough program. This evening, open to the community, is among the most moving events on Mercy Haven's calendar.
We would like to congratulate the participants of our most recent Breakthrough Session on their graduation, which was held on May 19, 2016.
