Breakthrough

“Breakthrough”, co-founded by S. Kathy Nolan and a group of volunteer mentors, began in 2007. Through Breakthrough, Mercy Haven reaches beyond its walls to the larger community, offering a 12-week, 24-session intense outreach and education program to homeless and formerly homeless individuals. The goal of Breakthrough is to help participants understand the factors that have contributed to their homelessness and to give them the tools and confidence to achieve personal goals. Over the course of the program, a mentor assists participants with goal setting and strategies that will prevent these patterns in the future. The program cycle runs 3 times a year.

As of 2022, Breakthrough has graduated more than 292 participants. In order to graduate, a participant must attend at least 22 of the 24-class sessions, and be engaged in topics including, but not limited to, conflict resolution, budgeting, resume building & job seeking, positive attitude & self-esteem, and building healthy relationships. Graduates have moved on to meet many of the goals they set for themselves, including moving into stable housing, finding employment, and enrolling in college.

A celebratory graduation ceremony ends each Breakthrough program. This special event, open to the community, is among the most moving events on Mercy Haven’s calendar.

Congratulations to all Our Graduates!!
