Those who own stock that has appreciated significantly might find this method of sharing their financial resources to be convenient. Federal tax laws allow a charitable deduction for the full market value of appreciated securities on the date of your gift. In addition, the donor pays no capital gains tax on the appreciated asset. To receive the tax benefits of this type of donation, the stock must be transferred by the brokerage directly to Mercy Haven.
If you are over age 70½ and have a traditional IRA, you have until December 31, 2011, to take advantage of a recent change in the tax law, which allows you to donate up to $100,000 tax free to charitable causes. Since persons older than 70½ are required to take a minimum distribution from their IRAs and pay Federal income tax on those funds, it may make philanthropic and economic sense for some to contribute a portion or all the minimum distribution to a qualified not-for-profit organization, such as Mercy Haven. As with gifts of stock, the funds must be transferred from the IRA by the financial institution directly to Mercy Haven.
There are a number of estate planning and planned giving options available that are beneficial to both the donor and Mercy Haven. These includearranging for a bequest from your will, making a gift of life insurance, and creating a revocable or irrevocable trusts or annuity. For moreinformation about these options, please contact our Development Office. |

Many businesses and corporations offer matching gift programs, whereby they will contribute to non-profits supported by their employees. These programs allow a donor to increase the size of their gift by 50%, 100% and sometimes more! Check with your company’s human resources or community relations department to find out if such a program exists at your place of employment. Then simply obtain the matching gift form, complete the employee portion and send your gift and the appropriate paper work to Mercy Haven. We’ll complete the non-profit’s portion of the form and then watch your generosity grow!
In the fall of 2011, Mercy Haven was approved to participate in the Long Island Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the only authorized solicitation of federal employees on behalf of charitable organizations. This campaign allows federal employees on Long Island to support Mercy Haven through a payroll deduction. Federal employees can designate Mercy Haven as the recipient of their donation by entering Mercy Haven’s CFC number on the pledge form and the amount he or she wishes to pledge. Mercy Haven’s CFC number is 38011.
