Who can benefit from the Legal Advocacy?
People who can not otherwise afford legal services on Long Island and who need free
legal representation to resolve "civil legal emergencies."
What kind of services can I expect from the Legal Advocacy Program?
- Legal advice to promote economic self sufficiency concerning the statutory protections for
people trying to go to work who need to retain eligibility for Social Security/SSI Disability,
Medicaid, Medicare, Public Assistance and/or Food Stamps.
- Free legal services on entitlement problems at hearings before Administrative Law Judges,
the Appeals Council and representation in state or federal court.
- Legal services for other civil legal emergencies such as access to medical care, immigration,
and eviction prevention.
- Education to members of the community who are serving persons in need of the publics'
assistance.Advocacy services to promote systemic change by creating ways in which existing
laws can either be made known or changed in a manner which is favorable to the poor.
- A model for the collaborative efforts of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in
developing Mercy Advocacy Programs in other Regional Communities of the Sisters of Mercy
in Erie, PA, Baltimore, MD, Merion, PA, and Asbury Park, NJ.
Who is eligible for the Legal Advocacy Program's services?
Persons who are served by the various ministries of the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Associates
in Kings, Queens, Nassau & Suffolk Counties.
